How Note Frequencies Are Calculated

The Formula

Hz = 440 x 2^((MIDI - 69) / 12)

Every note is calculated relative to A4 (MIDI 69 = 440 Hz). Each octave doubles the frequency. Each semitone multiplies by the 12th root of 2 (approximately 1.0595).

Example: Middle C (C4)

MIDI number: 60
Steps from A4: 60 - 69 = -9
Ratio: 2^(-9/12) = 0.5946
440 x 0.5946 = 261.63 Hz

This is 12-tone equal temperament (12-TET), the universal standard for Western music tuning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the frequency of middle C (C4)? +
Middle C is C4, with a frequency of 261.63 Hz and MIDI number 60. It is the C note closest to the center of a standard 88-key piano and serves as the reference point for the musical octave numbering system.
What frequency is A4? +
A4 is 440 Hz (MIDI 69). This is the international standard tuning pitch defined by ISO 16 in 1955. A4 is the A note above middle C and is the reference pitch used to tune orchestras and instruments worldwide.
What are the 808 bass note frequencies? +
808 bass typically lives in the C1-B2 range: C1 (32.70 Hz), D1 (36.71 Hz), E1 (41.20 Hz), G1 (49.00 Hz), A1 (55.00 Hz), C2 (65.41 Hz), D2 (73.42 Hz), E2 (82.41 Hz), G2 (98.00 Hz), A2 (110.00 Hz), B2 (123.47 Hz). Tune to the root note of your track key.
How do I convert MIDI note numbers to Hz? +
